The 2018 Thailand Cave Rescue – London Screening

On Wednesday evening 27th October, a delegation from the BCRC executive were lucky enough to be invited to a special UK screening of ‘The Rescue’ National Geographic documentary film in London.  The evening was a glitzy affair in the heart of the city with personalities from the media world and the cave rescue community coming together to enjoy the story of the Moo Pa football team’s rescue from deep inside Tham Luang in Northern Thailand.

The documentary was created by world renowned Directors Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and Executive Director, Thanet Natisri, and portrays the events using a mix of interviews, real footage from the rescue and re-enactments through the eyes of the British cave rescue diving team and individuals representing the Thai and other international rescue organisations involved.

After the premier and following a Q&A session with divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, Thanet and Chai, Peter Dennis, Chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council was invited up on stage to receive and accept a very generous donation of £15,000 from Chai Vasarheyi, on behalf of National Geographic.  Peter graciously accepted this donation and he talked about how the money would be used to support British and Irish cave rescue teams on the ground with equipment advances, purchase of kit and training. He also took the chance to thank all those involved in not only the production but the rescue itself.

The film went on general release across the UK from Friday 29th October and is well worth viewing. I am sure it will be supported by all the cave rescue teams across the UK and Ireland.

Film Company Synopsis:

THE RESCUE chronicles the dramatic 2018 rescue of 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach, trapped deep inside a flooded cave. Academy Award-winning directors and producers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin reveal the perilous world of cave diving, the bravery of the rescuers, and the dedication of an entire community that made great sacrifices to save these young boys. An outing to explore a nearby system of caves after soccer practice transformed into a two-week saga of survival and a story that would capture the world’s attention. With exclusive access and never-before-seen footage from the rescue, the film tells the story of the imagination, determination and unprecedented teamwork displayed during this heroic edge-of-your-seat mission with life-or-death stakes.
