Bill Whitehouse retires from the BCRC Executive committee

The Vice-Chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council, Bill Whitehouse, retired from the Executive committee during the AGM held in Buxton on Sunday 19 April 2026. This was a momentous occasion in the life of BCRC since Bill has served in a leadership role as chairman or vice-chairman for a remarkable 46 years!

Bill has been a tremendous servant of cave rescue in general for the duration of his voluntary service. He has demonstrated over those years detailed knowledge across many technical and administrative topics, especially those anticipated to impact cave rescue teams and operational procedures. Through tenacity and perseverance within meetings with various external organisations, Bill’s advocacy has successfully highlighted difficulties with proposed legislation and policies that may have unduly challenged cave rescue, although usually unintended and as a consequence of the low profile and poor understanding of the service amongst officials, compared with their understanding of other voluntary search and rescue organisations.

This essential work conducted in the background is rarely apparent or fully appreciated, so, as a mark of their tremendous gratitude, the cave and mine rescue team members of BCRC elected Bill as President of BCRC. This honorary, non-executive post has never been filled previously and provides Bill with a position from which to continue work on long-service awards for team members and to prepare and present display materials for the promotion of cave rescue at public events such as the Emergency Services Show.

Current Chair, Peter Dennis stated: “I wish to acknowledge the tremendous contribution that Bill Whitehouse has made over several decades in the scrupulous administration of cave rescue and in advocacy of the interests of cave rescue and cave rescuers. This in the context of limited awareness or recognition of this specialism within voluntary search and rescue by the public nor indeed the public bodies for whom cave rescue operates. I know that Bill has offered his significant experience to the service of his successor and I have truly valued Bill’s support and advice during my short tenure”.
