BCRC Training Coordinator’s News November 2016 – Jim Davis

The 2015/6 UKSAR training grants:

4 applications were made and were granted successfully.

Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation applied for and successfully completed:

  • A suitable purpose made confined space training dummy and transport bag (£368)
  • A Rescue vehicle C1 driver training course (£556).

BCRC applied for and was partially successful in:

  1. Two, one day instructed courses (each for 10 people) on shaft and pitch head rigging with the Larkin Frame (£3,570), one DCRO based, one GCRG based.

The feedback from theses courses was excellent. However, they were not filled fully with only 17 (3 of which were SARA) out of 20 places taken up.

  1. One day instructed courses (60 people, two on the same date- 24th Sept 2016) on specialised communications equipment involved in Cave Rescue (£2,756), one MRO based with 30 people, one CRO based with 30 people. Workshops will be on SARCALL, The Heyphone, Nicola 3, France Phone, and Cave Link.

Due to lack of interest, the MRO based course was cancelled and the CRO based course had only 24 out of the intended 30 places filled.

Conclusions from this have led me to make teams fully responsible for researching and completing their own applications. I shall be submitting one application for the pre-AGM training day.

Your team’s new opportunity to apply for a UKSAR Training Grant:

NOTE: Teams are responsible for researching and completing their applications.

When completed, they must be sent to me as BCRC has to submit them together.

Total funding available: £500,000

Focus/theme: General – organisations can apply for any SAR related training for their volunteers – as per the definitions online. For this round training can be part of existing planned and core training activities over the relevant timescale.

Considerations for you as Team Training Officers:

‘Ruth Lee’ training dummies- these might be available with detachable limbs to make transport easy, if enough teams want them.

Mileage budget for joint training with neighbouring teams.

Deadlines and conditions:

Deadline for applications: 5pm on Monday 19 December 2016

Decisions to be communicated by: Friday 3 March 2017

Training completed/grant spent: within 12 months of the grant offer (unless a different timescale is agreed)
